Things to Know About Backing Up a
Computer
Backing up important data on your computer is a critical step that
everyone should consider doing. In the event of unfortunate
circumstances, such as if your computer crashes or is attacked by a
malicious virus, your information will be saved. Unfortunately,
sometimes it is too late to do a backup, resulting in great lost and
expense. Now is the time to get familiar with the basics of a computer
backup.
Types of Backup
When backing up your computer, you will have to decide what types of
backup is best for you. There is \"Full backup,\" which backs up all the
data on your computer. \"Incremental backup\" is backing up files that
were changed since the last backup. \"Differential backup\" is similar
to an \"Incremental backup\" except for a slight difference. A
\"Differential backup\" backs up only the files that were changed after
the last full backup.
Backup Devices
Depending on the type of computer backup you choose, you may need a
specific storage device that fits your needs. There are different types
of backup devices such as, Internal hard disks: Can be installed on
existing computer. External hard disk: A device such as a USB flash
drive with sufficient space (a 200 GB USB flash drive should work fine).
DVD\'s or CD\'s that are \"writeable,\" can also be used.
Data for Backup
Some things on a computer may not be necessary for backup. Things that
are of significant importance may be backed up such as: Important files,
Emails, pictures, personalized settings, music or movies and other
things of importance. By choosing only the necessary items to backup,
you will be able to save time and space.
Consistency
To make sure that all your important information is safe, backup should
be performed on a regular basis. You may choose a schedule for each day
or week, when you would like to perform your backup. This will ensure
that your most valuable files and data are in a safe place, when they
are needed. Also, this will eliminate the risk of losing important
information, if there should be an unexpected disaster.
Security Measures
Keeping important backup information safe is critical. If you used USB
storage devices or Discs, be sure to store them in a safe location. For
backup that was done on an Internal hard disk, it is recommended to
choose a strong password and keep it safe. Avoid logging into your
computer using your password while in the company of others.
Backup Location
Choosing a backup location is also a critical decision, when backing up
a computer. Backup can be done Offline or Online. Offline backup, also
called \"Cold backup\" is done while the computer is disconnected from a
network. With Offline backup, files cannot be updated. Online backup, on
the other hand, can be updated regularly while connected to a network.
