Computer users are often oblivious to Spyware infections. After all, Spyware installs without the computer user’s consent or knowledge. However, symptoms such as sluggish performance or popup ad bombardments (which is typical of Adware) may have you wondering, “Is my computer infected with Spyware?” If you suspect a Spyware infection, taking matters into your own hands is essential. But what should you do?

If you suspect Spyware, take immediate measures to secure your computer. Update your computer security software with the latest antivirus and Antispyware updates. Keep in mind that antivirus programs do not necessarily protect against Spyware, so if your program does not provide this protection, invest in a product that does. Because many Antispyware programs are imposters, it is crucial that you select an Antispyware program from a trusted vendor. Do not buy computer security products from random popup ads or from sites that claim your computer is infected. Many a rogue Antispyware cleaner products trick users into downloading them by using official looking logos and names that sound remarkably like well known products; once downloaded, they infect the computer with Spyware!

Once you have a legitimate Antispyware program on your computer and the software is updated, run a complete system scan. In the meantime, refrain from using your computer for online banking, shopping, or logging onto websites where you must enter a user name and password.

While the Antispyware software is scanning your PC, make sure that your firewall is enabled. Windows XP and Vista come with a built-in firewall which is accessible via the Control Panel. Make sure that the firewall is set to on. If you have an Internet security suite of software, it likely comes with a firewall as well. In this case, go into the software and double check its settings. Ideally, the firewall will have varying levels of protection. Choose a level that detects suspicious incoming and outgoing traffic. When set up appropriately, even if you have Spyware on your computer, the firewall can block the attempted transmission of personal data.

After the scan is complete, consider using a secondary scanner. Since different developers use different detection mechanisms, you may find that a secondary scanner catches Spyware that the primary one missed. Be aware though that your primary Antispyware or Antivirus scanner will likely have quarantined files deemed to be threats already. As you scan with a secondary free malware scanner be sure to white list or ignore viruses and Spyware that has already been quarantined.

If you have Windows Vista, your computer comes with Windows Defender, a basic Antispyware tool from Microsoft. This product is a reliable Anti-Spyware detection tool.

Protecting your PC from Spyware and computer viruses is essential for any computer user who uses the Internet. Keep your security products updated and scan your system regularly. Make sure that your firewall is properly configured and be careful with what you download.
