Defragment hard drive

Why Is It Necessary to Defrag the Computer Hard Drive?

Since the Windows operating system places files on the hard drive wherever space is available, it is possible that your files will become scattered in several locations. Files become scattered over time as a simple matter of course. However, it is important to return your files back to their proper location since hundreds of files can easily become broken and misplaced on the computer, disrupting the processing of your machine.

What is Defragmentation?

Defragmentation is an important process that will collect up all of your computer files that have become scattered and place them back in their proper location. It takes all of the pieces of a file and places them in one location on the hard drive. It will also organize the files and directories that are stored on the computer.

Preparing to Defrag a Computer

Before you begin, it is best to close all other open applications. Check the system tray and close resident applications such as virus scanners. Other steps include checking the health of your hard drive first using the CHKDSK utility and saving important files to another media such as external hard drive, CD, or DVD.

This process needs time to complete. Therefore, do not begin to defrag your computer unless you are sure that you will have sufficient time to allow the process to complete itself. If you live in an area with frequent power outages, consider using a battery backup to protect your computer from the damage that can occur with an unexpected shutdown during the defragmentation process.

How to Defrag a Computer

  • Navigate to Start.
  • Select My Computer.
  • Search for and select the drive that you intend to defrag by right clicking on it.
  • Search for and select Properties.
  • Select and open Tools.
  • Search for and select Defragment Now.
  • Allow the program to defrag your computer. This will take at least 30 minutes in most cases. Other factors may influence the amount of time that it takes to defrag the computer including the size of the hard drive, the speed of the computer’s processor, the available operating memory that your computer has at the time, the amount of fragmentation that exists on your computer, and more.
  • Once the defragmentation process has been completed, check for error messages that appear. If none appear, proceed to the next step. If one or more error messages appear, you should print the log so that it will be available if you need to repair the hard drive or complete necessary maintenance on it in the future.
  • Close the application.

The Benefits of Defragmentation

Through the defragmentation process, you can assist in speeding up your computer’s performance. Since files are easier to access when they are all located in the proper location, your computer’s response time will improve.
